About 4 pm at any conference, I have had it. Enough already I want to say. I can't absorb another word. I hung in there, because Amy Stewart was about to speak. Her topic. "A Botanist Walks Into A Bar: How to Turn Any Topic Into a Lively and Sharable Story."

Hours of listening to well-known bloggers and digital marketers cajole me into thinking that content, clarity, consistency, strategy and most of all Google Analytics were essential elements of any good blog, I was ready for the anti-christ: Amy Stewart.

www.amystewart.com

Amy responded to the experts with humor. She described her blog, Garden Rant, written by a quartet of women in the following way:.

The Things We Don't Do:

We don't do DIY

We don't avoid politics

We don't avoid profanity

We don't think about what our readers want

We don't look at analytics

We don't know what SEO

We don't talk to each other

We don't have a plan

We don't make money

and we embrace controversy.

In the funniest way possible, Amy gave her assessment of what makes a blog worth reading: it tells a good story. What makes a compelling story: suspense, drama, conflict, characters, suspense, comedy and the unexpected.

Listening to Amy was like drinking a glass of grappa. The warmth goes through your entire body. I temporarily felt better about myself and my blog. This didn't last long.

Soon it was back to inbound marketing.

I did not know that content was an opportunity to market.

I did not know that creating content creates energy around "my business."

I did not know that creating an editorial calendar was essential.

I did not know that one should always tag images.

I did not know that comments are a measure of a person's engagement with your site.

I did not know to drive traffic is to build a community.

Does the reader feel they receive value from your site?
That was another one of those zingers. It was time for a cup of coffee.

I did know that in our current digital environment IMAGES are more powerful than words. In fact, if you've received the New Yorker this week, you can see that the magazine, we all hoped would never change, has changed. It's more visual.

I wasn't going to attend the Garden Bloggers Conference. I felt disloyal to Garden Writers. This conference unexpectedly was a kind of therapy. It was an opportunity to take a good hard look at what I want from my blog. I clearly fall into the Amy Stewart "column." You will not find plant of the week, recipes, contests, tips or advertising. You might find a good story.

A good looking dude with a powerful story to tell is a dynamic combo. Thomas Woltz is a landscape architect that talks about narratives, not projects. He is interested in relationships that last a lifetime, at least between people and plants.

On Tuesday night at MetroHort, Woltz began his talk by warning the audience that he was going to tell stories. And these stories start by listening to the "voice" of the site; by delving into the what has come before in a landscape and how patterns of alternation can become the gateway to restoration.

Using residential and public projects, Woltz constructed his thoughtful lecture as he would explore the layers of a site. He asked questions. What is the ecology of this place? What are the birds that would benefit from this garden? What is the web of connectivity that this place has? His language is rooted in the emotional bonds that people can forge with plants.

Woltz is as much philosopher as he is landscape architect. When I think about what I find most compelling when talking with someone, it's usually their approach. Woltz put his cards on the table Tuesday night. It is a table I would like to sit down at and have a conversation.

I couldn't help myself. The comparison screamed out at me. 7th century Peru / the color field painting of the 1960's? The Rothko paintings have so much depth and texture as do the Peruvian hangings made from the feathers of the macaw.

On the way to Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at the Met, a dozen of these hangings are on display. These are just a taste of the 96 hangings discovered in the early 1940's inside 3 ft. high ceramic jars.
These feathered offerings are the counterpoint to the large Met show, Interwoven Globe (The Worldwide Textile Trade 1500-1800). Upstairs at Interwoven Globe, in room after room, one can see dazzling feats of craftsman, from amazing dying techniques to luxurious silk embroidery Downstairs two simple squares of color convey power and artistry. Take your pick. My choice is obvious.
Is it possible to write about a sound installation? A good writer can. I am not one of those. The best I can do is to urge anyone living in the New York area to make the effort to go to The Cloisters and listen to Janice Cardiff's piece, The Forty Part Motet in the Fuentiduena Apse.

You might ask, what's the big deal? I've been to choral performances... and so have I. The Forty Part Motet was by recorded by Cardiff in England's Salisbury Cathedral in 2001. Each part is recorded individually.
I try to savor every bite. I try not to stuff my face. I try to appreciate the artistry and effort that went into most of what I eat, even if it's an apple.

The question of whether or not FOOD IS ART is not something I have not given much thought to. Thursday night at The New School, a panel attempted to answer that query. The discussion centered around the word ART. What is it? This isn't the first group of people that have tried to parse that word.

Fabio Parasecoli, Professor and Coordinator of the Food Studies Program at The New School organized the event. Deliberately or not, he put together a group of people with extremely diverse points of view. This makes for a good evening.

The anti-ART contingent was represented by Joe Grimm and Lauren Carter Grimm of Grimm Artisanal Ales. They passionately decried the formalism of traditional ART. They put together a power point presentation composed of the work of early performance artists, as well as those artists, like Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Torres was known for his mounds of hard candy. Viewers were able to take a piece.

On the other side, was Michael Laiskonis, pastry chef at Le Bernardin. He represented haute cuisine. Punctuation, texture, balance, color and structure are the metaphors Laiskonis borrowed from the arts, to describe how he thinks as a chef. He sketches out a new dessert on paper, before actually putting together any ingredients. "I do not consider myself an artist." All I could think about was how much I wanted to be at Le Bernardin and taste one of his creations.

I am sure I missed something Thursday night. My attention was diverted. I was thinking about Is Food ART? Are we really talking apples to apples? Is Ferran Adrias' Parmesan and Porcini Forest Flower as innovative as Matisses' Red Room. Is Rene Redzepis' Radish, Soil and Grass as memorable as James Turrells' Aten Reign? Is Hestor Blumenthals' Salmon Poached in Liquorice Gel as creative as The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper?

Feeling very old, I had to say NO; it's not the same.
Who loves a chain link fence? Not me. I know they have a purpose, but I have never seen one to love until today.

Based on a project, Katherine Daniels, did on Randall's Island two years ago, I had an idea that the new chain link fence enclosing the playground on Randall's Island, could be improved by adding a design using fence weave, a construction material.
I starting thinking about who would be the perfect person to come up with a concept for the fence design using plastic. I thought of my sister. Sheila, has been weaving for 30 years and currently has a business creating handbags by weaving strips made from ordinary plastic bags of every imaginable color. She was the logical choice to visualize a design for the fence and execute it with a group of volunteers.
As a family, we baked cakes, painted still lifes and traveled extensively in the United States, but we never "built" anything together. My father was Mr. Fix-It. He saw no need for assistance. On Saturday, my sister, Sheila, my niece Lola, and volunteers from Google wove a fence design conceived by Sheila for Randall's Island Park playground.

It was a transformative moment. A pedestrian fence became an playful artifice. The colors of the weave are a counterpoint to the colors of the play equipment. I am imagining all the chain link fences on Randall's Island woven with plastic strips. It's a worthy ambition.

Who knows. It is what Wouter Van Twiller, representative of Holland, paid the Native Americans of Manhatas for the island. Van Twiller was no fool, he purchased the island for this private use and Governors Island became known as Nutten Island until the Dutch got hip and confiscated the island in 1638.
On Wednesday, I took a private tour of West 8's vision for Governor's Island.

Adriaan Geuze of West 8, is supposed to have remarked on viewing Governors Island
for first time "It's as flat as a pancake." And so is Holland.

Painters, like Jacob Van Rusidael captured this perfectly in the 17th century. To addrerss the issue of topographical boringness, West 8 has designed a series of hills, the highest one is to rise 80 ft.

Think of the responsibility of keeping thousands of trees alive in 100 degree weather. It's a daunting task. Of course, like all construction projects, this one is a little off schedule. The trees came, but the areas weren't ready for installation, so the architects constructed a "nursery" for bare root trees, potted, mulched and added irrigation. In addition to tagging the trees, they had the nursery label the trees according to their location called petals. The rows are all colored coded, which correspond to their petal.

We were able to ask a lot of questions. For me the practical often surfaces before the aesthetic. "What is the maintenance plan?"
"That is a good question. We don't know yet."

Having learned the hard way. Maintenance is just as important as design. Build it and they will come, but if you don't figure before you build it, how to take care of, you find yourself in a real mess.

Governors Island is an amazing addition to New York. It's a world away from the city, but within spitting distance. The same can be said of Randall's Island, but with one big difference. Governors Island has no cars. And although the expected quiet is disrupted by the helicopter pad close by, it's still unlike any other green space available to New Yorkers.

The West 8 vision may not be bucolic, but it has a pastoral charm.

To grow rice in the Northeastern US might seem like folly, to some people. For the 100 people, who attended the Northeast USA Rice Conference, growing rice is a matter of perseverance, dedication and collective knowledge. Growing rice is about asking the right questions.

We gathered at Akaogi Farm in West Westminster West, Vermont to share ideas, learn from one another and laugh at our mistakes. Under a tent, sandals kicked off, ages from 16 to 90, we discussed the National Science Foundation grant and Cornell rice research that is behind this conference. The attendees included a group of refugees from Bhutan, who had come to learn how to grow rice in their adopted city of Burlington, Vermont.

Steve Jobs? Yes! James Dyson? Yes! Rice Farmers? YES! Susan Mc Couch, Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell University characterized everyone under the big top as innovators.

I rarely think of myself as doing anything innovative. The more we talked with each other, the more I was convinced that this characterization was accurate. We've all gone out on a limb.

If you live in New York, there is always a view you haven't seen. If I had to choose a potager with ta view, it would be the one at the Waldorf. The garden was the inspiration of David Garcelon, Executive Chef at the Waldorf. He came to New York from the Fairmont Hotel in Toronto, which has a very large veg garden on its roof. The gold supports on the beehives, the white containers reminiscent of Chateau de Villandry and green astro turf on the deck scream pretentiousnesses, but it's a showpiece as much as a working garden.

It's easy to be cynical or at least skeptical about this type of venture: a kitchen garden at the top of the Waldorf. On Tuesday night, I went to the top: the roof the the Waldorf Astoria, where the Hort Society and New York Beekeepers have partnered with the Waldorf Hotel to create a kitchen garden filled with herbs, fruit trees and bee hives.

George Pisenga, Director of Horticulture for Hort Society has exciting plans for the garden. Doubling the current space, adding a large dining table and holding events that highlight the garden and the bees. Andrew Cote of New York City Beekeepers and Bees Without Borders (http://www.andrewshoney.com/Bees Without Borders) is packaging the honey gathered from the hives at the Waldorf. Chef Garcelon and all the other chefs from the Waldorf use the herbs from the garden to garnish their dishes. The fruit produced by the "orchard," they intend to use to make signature cocktails for the Waldorf bars. Cole Porter's lyrics "You're the top! You're a Waldorf salad" might have to change to "You're a Waldorf cocktail."

We ate delicious lavender cookies at sunset prepared by Chef Garcelon. A perfect way to watch the sunset over Manhattan.

I goggled farm to fork, farm to table and farm dinner, before I was satisfied that I had covered the topic. Our decision to hold a farm dinner at our Urban Farm on Randall's Island, coincided with an 8,000 sq. ft. expansion of the farm this year. We added additional growing space, a mobile kitchen, a gathering space and one more rice paddy. It was time to "show off" a little.

Setting a table for 125 guests is a daunting task. I felt a little like Carson in Dowton Abbey. I resisted the temptation to get out a ruler and line up the glasses, plates and silverware. Instead we concentrated on the logistics of where to place the bars and how to site the table and kitchen area. Some people have a pastoral setting. At Randall's Island we are surrounded by water and have views of the city skyline. At the southern end of the island, where the farm dinner took place, is the Hell Gate Strait, the Triborough Bridge and Hell Gate Railroad Bridge. It's unusual setting, but a great one.

These type of dinners are usually fund raisers. This was only part of the goal of our farm dinner. We wanted people to come, who have never been to Randall's Island and are not familiar with the Urban Farm and its programming. We succeeded. The dinner was sold out in a couple of days. We have started planning for next year. Stay tuned!
If strolling down the street in New York this summer feels like walking on hot coals, head for the James Turrell exhibition at the Guggenheim. It's a cool down for the mind.

Before the guards kicked us off the floor, I had a chance to experience Turrell's piece in the rotunda as I imagine the artist wanted us to. Full frontal. Absorbed in the light changes. Surrounded. The colors change slowly and so does your depth perception. Opening up and flattening, the rings play with your mind.

On a humid, temperature rising day, go to the Guggenheim and do what they tell you do in yoga class. Do not look at your neighbor. Let go it all go. Focus on the rings. It's the "OM" moment.

A peculiar benefit of the show is the Frank Lloyd Wright ramp. We all know it. It's usually filled with art. Start at the top and spiral down or walk up the cone. The railing is always open to the skylight at the top and it's customary to peer down into the lobby. At the Turrell show, the railing is closed off with a white screen to create the rotunda piece. There is no art in the spiral. The additional Turrell pieces and other exhibitions are in the side galleries. The ramp itself becomes a different kind of light piece. I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but it really works.

If I lived near the Guggenheim, I would stop in often. The Turrell piece, Aten Reign, is as refreshing as any Shaken Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade. It's soul food for the mind.

The only meaning Monte Carlo has for me are images of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in To Catch A Thief? As a child, I was sure my future husband would be a reincarnation of Cary Grant. For years I unconsciously measured all boyfriends against Cary. Some were debonair, but not witty. Some were cool under pressure, but cracked when it came to intimacy. By the time I met my husband, I had long given up on meeting a Cary-look-alike. I had happily moved on.

Yesterday, FIAF offered a program in honor of 150th Anniversary of the Principality of Monaco. The exhibition of photographs by Gabrielle Basilico, commissioned by the principality, concentrated on the urbanization of Monaco. This rocky outcropping has turned into a place as dense as midtown New York.
Without Monte Carlo, what would Monaco be? The docudrama, commissioned by Societe des Bains de Mer de Monaco, written by Kate Krasuski and directed by Francois Freynet, attempted to trace the history of Monte Carlo. How did it become a playground for the rich and famous? Using vintage footage, the film answered this question. Francois Blanc and his wife, Marie were hired in 1866 by Prince Charles III to make Monaco a "gaming destination," bringing people and money to Monaco, a sleepy, poor country. The husband and wife partnership delivered on the Princess's desire and more. They created Monte Carlo and its wealth.

I took my niece, Lola, who is in the US for a summer work experience with the Vermont Conservation Corp, to the exhibition and film. Afterwards, we went out to dinner and I asked Lola what she thought of the film. "It seemed a bit like propaganda. I liked the docudrama part. I thought it was clever to have the recreations in color and the vintage footage in black and white. The narrator made one remark that struck me. In the beginning of the film, the narrator recounts that "Monaco was just lemon and olive trees." That's NOT nothing. I had to agree, what I wouldn't give for a few lemon and olive trees in my backyard.

The history of gardens designed and tended by their owners are the autobiographies of their owners. North Hill, the home of Joe Eck and the late Wayne Winterowd, is chronicled in a number of books written by both men. The latest book, finished by Joe, after Wayne's death is "not a book about gardening or about eating. It's a book about love."

Joe Eck read 4 chapters from To Eat at the Hort Society last night. He has a hushed voice. I was in the second row and could hear perfectly. I wasn't lulled to sleep. I was gently rocked into a stupor. I felt a little envious of this love at first sight couple and the lives of gardening and eating. Joe and Wayne cultivated. This book is a homage to their long life together. It was finished by Joe after Wayne passed. And it is a tribute to Joe that he managed to keep the tone and the writing of their joint voice. After living together for 42 years, they perfected the art of writing a book together.

As Joe said, this book does not have the in-depth gardening wisdom and knowledge of many of their other books. It is about the origin of some of their ideas about living, their relationships with friends and especially their decision to live their lives without the trappings of grandeur or money. It's a life many of us aspire to.

I have been to North Hill many times over 20 years. It's near my house in Vermont. Joe and Wayne's garden is a garden I admire. It's developed over years. It has a very unique micro-climate for Vermont ( they can grow things no one else in Vermont can) and it's been changing and evolving for over 30 years.

In 1988, North Hill was open (as it used to be in those days) as a benefit for the Brattleboro Hospice once a year. It was a very hot day in July. Guests parked their cars in the nearest town and a shuttle bus was provided to the garden. Vermonters are not heat lovers and everyone looked and felt exhausted by the humid air. Part of the garden is on a hilly site. Walking up the hill toward the house, I noticed a very unusual site. Someone was pouring a pitcher of ice water on Himayalan Blue Poppies (Meconopsis grandis). It was Joe.

Joe and Wayne's book To Eat is about remembering and savoring. The memory of Joe pouring ice water on his blue poppies is one I will never forget. 15 years ago, this act of dedication and folly was emblematic of what how a "real" gardener took care of his/her plants. I've since grown up. I know Joe has.
New School, Monday, June 10.2013

Who doesn't want to hear David Chang talk about food? Buying a ticket, I knew from the get-go, the topic of conversation at the New School was the interaction between the culinary experience and the physical design of the restaurant. Conceptually, it struck me as a great idea, but the reality was far different.

For many people, David Chang is a food guru. His ever expanding empire is a testament to the popularity of his menus and ideas. Chang's latest venture in Toronto, 4 restaurants stacked one on top of the other represents the diversity of Chang's mindset. From noodle bar on the first floor to high-end tasting menu on the top floor, the Toronto restaurants are a departure from the Chang look and feel. They are designed.

This was the point Chang wanted to make. His first restaurant, noodle bar in New York was not designed. It functioned by default. He found a space that he could afford. This space like all his other restaurants, not including Toronto, were made into restaurants by the cheapest possible means. The fact that one had to walk through the kitchen or the lack electricity to air-conditioned the space was the Chang way. "The food is the thing. I never think about details, like the bathroom." Customers can put up with a lot for great food.

Chang delivers. He named some of his favorite restaurants. All of which are fancy and expensive. Chang started to laugh. "The flowers at Gramercy Tavern are beautiful. When I think about them, I am so glad we don't have flowers at any of my restaurants. We just have a blank box."

It was a simple message: one not of form following function or even the other way around. "The desperation to make ends meet, makes me think about the food and only the food."

I thought I wouldn't care. After all, meeting Minnie and Mickey is no big deal, Some might say it's not worth mentioning. Two days ago, I would have agreed. Today, I feel differently. I don't think of myself as someone, who has bought into American culture hook, line and sinker. I detest malls, have never eaten a happy meal, refuse to watch large sporting events and resist the temptation of constant, nonstop consumerism.

Yesterday, I discovered something about myself that surprised me. I was thrilled to meet Mickey and Minnie. I realize, I don't think of them as dressed up figures in costume. Mickey and Minnie are people. It's a strange thing to say. This part of American culture is etched in my brain and heart. Those over-sized ears, rosy cheeks and happy faces crept into my psyche years ago and have stayed there.

I was at Disney for a Recruiting Event. Giving people the blah, blah, blah about the Urban Farm on Randall's Island. It's exhausting talking for 3 hours non-stop. It was a relief to go into the room next door for an awards ceremony. Disney volunteers were honored for the work they did in 2012. Part of ceremony was an appearance by Minnie and Mickey. There was a lot of talk about the Disney family. I was glad to be part of the Disney family for an evening. It was a way of meeting Minnie and Mickey. After an exhausting day, I walked home animated, glowing and inspired.

Wirtz was the only European to speak at the Civic Horticulture Conference in Philadadelphia, presented by The Cultural Landscape Foundation.

He was a voice out of sync with the rest of the group.

In case you haven't noticed, there is a resurgence of the urban. People used to have to live in the city; now people are choosing to live in city. This may have been the raison d'etre for the this conference. Divided into three sections: The Street, The Productive Garden, Parks and Plazas, the speakers in each section illustrated how their projects engaged people in natural processes and used plants to express the functionality of landscape.

The question of the day: Is horticulture humanizing the city? Matthew Urbanski, of Michael VanValkenburgh Associates, Inc., traced the history of landscape architecture, from Jane Jacobs to William Whyte to Robert Smithson to Mary Miss to Betsy Barlow Rogers, who he credited with saving the horticultural richness of Central Park. According to Urbanski this was the moment...the emancipation of landscape architecture. Others, like Susan Weller of OLIN argued that "everything olde is nouveau again."

It was a great change to have landscape architects talk about trees and plants, instead of hardscape. This renaissance of horticulture might be a secret or an unpopular notion. The auditorium was half full. It didn't matter to me. Susan Weiler showed a project I did not know about and it surprised me. The Sol LeWitt garden, Lines in Four Directions in Flowers conceived of 30 years and recently installed at the Philadelphia Museum is made up of 7,000 plantings arranged rows dictated by the pattern designed by the artist.

Would you want to be the one to follow this directive? It's complicated. I recently worked with Maria Loboda on a "color-coded" garden for the Freize Art Fair on Randall's Island. It wasn't easy and it only lasted for 4 days. I immediately sympathized with Susan Weiler.
Taking as inspiration the lush parkland of Randall’s Island, the artist
will turn an area of the park into a color-coded garden, an exact
replica of an illustration of a European interior design motif from the

will translate the two-dimensional image into a living landscape of
plants, flowers and shrubs, highlighting not only the relationship between interior and exterior, but also between two and three-dimensinal landscapes." Freize Art Fair website

I felt bolstered by the day. I work with plants and trees everyday. Keith McPeters of Gustafson Gurthrie Nichol talked about how we return to the garden in a time of crisis. I have never left it and it has never let me down.

As the doors of the elevator opened on the 5th floor of the Met, I skipped off. Continued walking at a fast clip the 25 feet it takes to reach the first stone pavers on the roof deck. Was this the work of Imran Qureshi? Or was it the ghost of Jackson Pollack? At first glance it looked like randomly thrown paint; on closer inspection pattern and intention made itself known.

In a small book published by the Met, Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Met compares Qureshi's work on the roof deck of Met, high above Central Park, to his affinity and love of the Mughal garden. Qureshi is a skillful practitioner of miniature painting. For Qureshi, the gardens of paradise as a form conceptually relate to the "gardens" of Central Park. Both spaces were created as retreats: arenas of repose and relaxation.

Anyone who spends time in Central Park thinks of it as an earthly paradise. It's the place you go "get away" from the city.

This idyllic view is only part of the story of this piece. Quershi started using red in response to the violence in his native Lahore. "Yes, these forms stem from the effects of violence. They are mingled with the color of blood, but at the same time, this is where a dialogue with life, with new beginnings and fresh hope starts."

Intellectually, I understand what Qureshi is saying. My experience of the work is different. When I wake up in the morning, things are a little blurry. My distance vision needs correction. I see the rough edges of things, but not their details. Once I put my contacts in, clarity is the name of the game. I see pattern and subtleties. That is how I felt seeing Imran Qureshi's roof garden commission: two stages of enlightenment and delight.

It's a risky business attending an event between two authors you've never heard, even if Bjork is going to introduce one of them. Sjon is not only a novelist, poet and playwright, he is collaborator with Bjork on many projects including Biophilia. This last fact is apparently known to the hipster population of New York, which made up most of the audience on Thursday night.

My own acquaintance with Sjon's work was limited to picking up his book The Blue Fox and reading a few pages before the doors opened at 7pm. Written in terse, short paragraphs, many of pages are half full, which is not to diminish their strength or magnetism.

Iceland, like other parts of Scandinavia has a rich history of myths. Sjon compared the unstable and shifting landscape of Iceland geologically to the folklore of his country: a world populated by hidden forces. A country of folk stories where nature manifests itself in hermetic customs.

"I am interested in the fact that the human being is always looking for itself in its surroundings. We see a human face in a rock. Nature is a mirror of ourselves to ourselves."

"Just keep brushing your teeth, no matter how they tell you the world was made."

If I had to choose one thing that Sjon said that made the evening worthwhile, it would be this: "the lullaby is the origin of all of our participation in culture. I am always aiming for something like the lullaby in my work." Up until Thursday night, I had never thought about the lullaby as my connection to music, story or emotion.
Grand Opening of
Native Plant Garden

I know how hard it is to maintain relationships. I don't do a very good job of it. I make excuses. I am too busy, overwhelmed, exhausted. After listening to Dr. Naczi and Dr. Tallamy, I was relieved. Native plants are all about relationships. Left alone these relationships remain intact for millennia.

It was Rick Darke, who delivered the bad news. Humans are the ultimate invasive species. He continued, "The idea of wilderness is a bankrupt idea." Darke was on a mission to wake up the audience. "We are living in an interesting age. We are part of one continuous living process called Nature."

Darke couldn't help himself. Starting off with the disclaimer, that Piet Oudolf is a good friend of his, Darke showed pictures of The High Line before it became The High Line: the native flora, lack of pesticides and irrigation; the beauty of that landscape. He drew attention to the functionality of the landscape as it existed before it became a destination garden.

This brought the discussion back to relationships. How the connections between plants, insects, and birds create what we call a garden. He urged us all to become citizen scientists. After an entire morning of concepts like biodiversity, ecosystem, food web, I was ready to make new marriage vows: to commit to functional, productive landscapes.

Katz contracted AIDS in 1991, moved to a commune in Tennessee and started experimenting
with fermentation. He has published two
books on fermentation and is a celebrity on the alternative food trail. I know
why. He is engaging, clear and
unpretentious. Although he can rattle
off the names of specific bacteria and molds, he prefers to make his point by talking
about fermentation like he is having a personal conversation with you. Katz to make people less afraid of fermenting foods. He wants people to engage with the world of
food and to understand that bacteria and fungi are part of our bodies. Sandor makes a convincing pitch that the process of fermentation changes with its community, meaning the community of your
refrigerator and your location.
Peppered with the history of each house, the peculiarities of its owners and the evolution of its gardens, Pamela Smith gave a workman-like presentation. For example, Penrhyn Castle, 600 ft. long, contains a one-ton bed made of slate built for a visit by Queen Victoria, as well as a garden full of fuchsias; Erddig Hall, owned by the same family for generations, composed poems about all their servants; Llanerchaeron (pictured above) where the Head Gardener, a "tidy person" has trouble balancing the self-seeding meadow that surrounds the house with the English tendency to create order.
